Science & Technology

The important thing is to not stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.

A Space & Technology Workshop was organized on 16th November, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School. It was conducted by Mr. Sarvesh K Bhardwaj PhD, MS from Goddard Institute for Space Studies (NASA, USA). He is an Astrophysicist and founder of SDRO New Delhi, India. The workshop lasted over 2 hours and was conducted on the 3rd floor of the AV Hall. A total of 167 students attended the work shop in two sessions.

The students of Std. 8 & 9 who participated in the workshop were enthusiastic and found the workshop interesting. Mr. Sarvesh’s excellent presentation came with information and funny videos, such as one showing alien abduction.

The workshop gave students an opportunity to interact with a knowledgeable person. The speaker’s patience while explaining complex aspects of astrophysics made it easy for eighth and ninth graders to understand. He also gave evidence of extra terrestrial life, the latest photos and videos of moon, planets and also Mars. The video showed the rover ‘Curiosity’ reaching Mars and exploring various facts about the soil and gases present there.

Other topics which were explained were birth and death of stars, Galaxies, Black Hole, Neutron Star, White Dwarf, facts and evidence to overcome myths, current research and upcoming possibilities, the making of a telescope etc.

The most interesting aspect of the workshop was the Quiz programme. The students were eager to answer questions. Few NASA T-shirts were given to the students as rewards.

The workshop addressed the curiosity, scientific temperament and love for astronomy. It also inspired many students to pursue astronomy in the future. Requests were made for continuation of the next two levels of the workshop. The students also said that they have been encouraged to learn physics and would like to know more about the beauty of the universe.
