The 157th Annual Athletic Meet began on the 4th of Sept with the Primary School events (LKG to Std IV). A much awaited day in the school calendar - Sports Day – was marked by thrilling excitement and fervent activity. Young Josephites were bubbling with enthusiasm and their cheerful chatter filled the grounds from morning. Pennants were flying high with the school colours of red, yellow, blue and green, alongside the Joseph’s flag of blue and white. The freshly marked tracks for the athletes and the decorated stands for the guests added to the festive air that pervaded the school campus.
The ceremony began with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Mrs. Vinisha Nero, member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. She was escorted onto the grounds by Rector, Rev.Fr. Anthony Joseph, S.J., Principal of SJBHS, Rev. Fr. Clifford Sequeira S.J., Primary School Administrator and Vice Principal, Rev. Fr. Sunil Fernandes, S.J., Vice Principal of SJBHS, Mrs. Miriam Angelo and the first Vice President of the OBA, Mr. Umakanth Alva. Mrs Nero was presented the Guard of Honour by the NCC cadets and later led to the grand stand where the school flag was unfurled. As the iconic Josephite flag fluttered in the breeze, the march past began and the Chief Guest took the salute.
Rev. Fr. Sunil Fernandes S.J., Primary School Administrator and Vice Principal, warmly welcomed the gathering. The Rector, Rev Fr Anthony Joseph S.J., spoke about the need to work in a team, to work together towards greater unity and integrity, not just in the school, but in the state and nation too.
The Chief Guest, Mrs. Vinisha Nero, spoke of SJBHS being a ‘haven’ for inculcating right values among the youth. She declared the Sports Meet open.
Then it was time for the displays and SJBHS Primary School did not fail to dazzle the many invitees present. The displays used sunflowers, umbrellas, multi-coloured pompoms, hoops and caps. They showcased a combination of muscle power, graceful twirls and clock-work precision. A feast for the eyes!
The excitement continued with the start of the track and field events. The short distance races saw nail biting finishes with anxious parents on the edge of their seats. In true Jospehite spirit, students were applauded for their triumphs as well as cheered on to do better, reiterating the culture of Sports Day being one where both triumphs and disasters are short lived, even as they form the fabric of memories that remain.
The Primary School Sports Day came to an end with the prize distribution, the closing march past and the Vote of Thanks.
