“Learning is the discovery that something is possible….!”
The SJBHS Resource Room, appropriately named PRAGATI - meaning ‘Progress Ahead’- is an initiative to
help and support children having Learning Difficulties. It is for those students who belong to a regular class
but need some special instructions in an individualised or small group setting for a portion of the day.
The teaching incorporated within the Resource Room involves individual help in weak areas of learning
such as reading, comprehension, spelling, written expression, handwriting, and math. Strengthening a
child’s higher order mechanisms facilitating attention, concentration, memory, thinking and reasoning
abilities is also focused upon.
Methods and materials are adapted to students' learning styles and characteristics using multisensory and
other specialized approaches. The children attend the sessions thrice a week during a light period of the
day.
The resource room is given a referral when a teacher observes a child who displays difficulty in the
classroom. Sometimes, parents have already assessed the child, in which case the referral is from outside.
Such children are individually assessed by the special educators at Resource Room, who are well qualified
and trained in the field of Psychology and Special Education.
The Assessment Report of each child helps the special educators to design and develop a Specific
Educational Plan to remediate and enhance the child’s learning process progressively. The special
educators work alongside with classroom teachers and help them with methods and techniques, to
effectively monitor the learning curve of the child in the classroom settings.
Parents are sensitized about their children and consent is obtained before enrolling the child in the
Resource Room for the academic year. Regular meetings with parents are conducted and suitable
measures have been provided to ensure mutual support to the child. They are also encouraged to contact
the special educators to discuss concerns, if any.
A supportive environment, conducive to learning is provided to the child in order to bridge the gap
between his current performing level and that of his grade.
At the end of the academic year, a detailed report of the child is reviewed to determine the progress and
to further provide appropriate course of action. Confidentiality of the documents and other related
information is maintained strictly.
The Resource Room may also seek support from an external source, for a child’s problem, depending on
the complexity level and co-morbid conditions, if any.
