Mushroom Cultivation Workshop
The humble mushroom was the focus of the workshop held on January 13, 2025, in the auditorium. The audience were students of Class 8&9 as their biology textbooks focus on ‘Food Production’ and ‘Economic Importance of Bacteria and Fungi’. The workshop was animated by Ms Prithvi Kinni, cofounder of Nuvedo, who has spent her time studying and observing the therapeutic and healing benefits of mushrooms. Her greatest vision for Nuvedo is for people to bring back control of their food and diet through mushrooms.
The guest speaker spoke about the different types of mushrooms, she busted myths about these fungi, and told the students about the multitude of benefits brought about by this organism. Ms Kinni kept reminding the students about the commercial as well as the futuristic uses of mushrooms that is just been unearthed due to the sudden world-wide interest in finding alternative protein sources, alternative building and packing materials and alternative means of income for landless labourers.
The students were taught about the structure and functions of the various fungi so tuning in to the speaker’s narrative was easy. The students fielded several questions in the Q&A session and clarified their doubts by a one-on-one session with the speaker after the programme. The actual growth of the mushrooms and the demonstration of the use of the substrate will be shown to the students during a class-wise session, as and when the mushrooms grow. This was the promise made by the speaker to the students and they had full faith that by the end of the month they would witness the hands-on follow up of the workshop.
The expert ignited their curiosity about the potential of the mushroom in food, medicine, and industry.
