IN CELEBRATION OF OLD BOY N. A. SOONAWALA

A Man for All Seasons

The SJBHS family gathered today, on August 16, 2024 in the Xavier Auditorium of St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School to honour and celebrate the accomplishments of a nonagenarian, special Old Boy from the batch of 1950, Mr. N. A. Soonawala. Mr. Jimmy Anklesaria, from the batch of 1972, Mr. George Olapally, Mr. Shailendra Gupta, Mr. Jacob Kurien and Mr. Brian D’ Lima were present at the ceremony.

Mr. N. A. Soonawala is, in no small measure, the epitome of all the virtues that every Josephite holds near: humility in comportment, modesty, confidence, altruism, astuteness and industriousness. His contributions span a long era of almost half a century, where he displayed admirable endurance in his loyalty to and his efforts in growing the Tata Group. Having occupied various reputable positions within the group, including Vice Chairman of the Tata Sons Ltd., the holding company of the Tata Group, Mr. N. A. Soonawala was thus in close association with reputable leaders of the Tata Group, including Mr. Ratan Tata. Despite his demanding schedule and work, he continued to take active part in OBA activities, especially philanthropy and charity work. As quoted by Mr. Jacob Kurien, he was the quintessence of the proverb: “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far”, as quoted by President Roosevelt.

Indeed, Mr Ratan Tata himself commended Mr. Noshir Soonawala for his “unwavering commitment to success”, “exceptional leadership”, “organisational skills” and his “vision” which embraced the principles of sustainability, ethics, diversification and community welfare, all of which were core aims of the Tata Group and its innovations. Furthermore, Fr. Sunil Fernandes also extolled the permanence of his personal beliefs and morals, and the kindness and compassion he exhibited in his collaboration on many good-willed projects with the OBA.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Mr. N. A. Soonawala was unable to attend the event. Therefore, in his stead, the OBA Lifetime Achievement Award and the citation were received by Mr. Jimmy Anklesaria, who proceeded to read the former’s acceptance speech that beautifully enclosed feelings of gratitude and nostalgia, reminiscing of all of life’s past joys and experiences.
