Learning to be Secular
Secularism fosters open-mindedness, understanding and a genuine respect for any religion, caste or creed. It allows for an absence of discrimination against people in the name of religiosity. At SJBHS, ‘Secularism’ is the buzz word; wherein, academics and acceptance of all faiths form the hallmark of education.
The Inter-Faith Prayer Service held on August 2, 2023 bears testimony to the recognition of the diverse culture at SJBHS; the multi-dimensional aspects of various religions being followed by the stakeholders; and the secular nature of education as imparted by the school. The service commenced with the lighting of the symbolic lamp followed by the prayer and prayer song, calling on the Almighty. As a sign of unity, the prayer service brought to the fore the various religious practices, the tenets and the main rituals of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Jainism and Zoroastrianism. The underlying principles of all religions was love, compassion and tolerance.
The Primary School Administrator, Fr Vishal D’Souza SJ, in his address, asked the gathering to reflect on the diversity of the Indian society, its impact on the peace and glory of the nation and the importance of tolerance to enable unity in multiplicity.
With a pledge to continue our contribution to the society in forming citizens who are imbued with the beliefs of receptiveness, empathy and understanding; the Inter-Faith Prayer Service was brought to an end. The students were appreciative of the various religious tenets as they had been witnesses to the beauty of the different religious practices.
‘Religion does not consist in erecting temples, or building churches, or attending public worship. It is not to be found in books, or in words, or in lectures, or in organisations. Religion consists in realisation.’
