‘In a gentle way, YOU can empower the world.’
Mahatma Gandhi
On the 15th of August, 2020, the staff of the pre-primary section of SJBHS boost the morale of the tiniest of the Josephites with a Fun Day on the topic ‘Pride of India’.
As the Indian flag was hoisted in the school grounds by our Principal, Fr Sunil Fernandes, the salute said it all - we are proud to be Indians and prouder still to adhere to the tenets of the preamble where Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity hail supreme.
In the midst of the pandemic, when the staff and students of the school are home-bound, the oneness of spirit was deeply felt as all joined in the celebrations of the 74th Independence Day, streamed on YouTube.
The tri-colour fluttered gently in the cool morning breeze and the prayer sent forth a plea for the protection of the nation and its citizens from the clutches of the deadly virus. In his speech, Fr Sunil urged the students to take a while to think of the suffering multitudes. He asked them to devise ways to teach someone to read and write – the lost, the last and the least, those who do not enjoy the same benefits as we do.
The patriotic song that followed was a tribute to the brave hearts who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The Independence Day speech mapped India’s progress since 1947 but at the same time cautioned each one on the pitfalls of resting on the laurels of past glory. A semi-classical dance rendition and the SJBHS choir’s singing of ‘We shall overcome; were both apt events for such a big occasion.
