Earth Sustainability Programme (Vermicomposting)

Re-use and Revitalise

In a room filled with the unmistakable, earthy scent of soil and fresh life, we gathered, not merely to observe, but to learn how the smallest of creatures—the humble earthworm—can help rejuvenate the planet. The vermicomposting session felt less like a lesson and more like an awakening, a reminder that true change starts beneath the surface, in places most of us rarely look. The entire programme on Earth Sustainability was an AVANI, Social Innovation Lab and Loyola Technology Centre initiative and was held on November 5, 2024.

Our chief guest, Mr. Somayya K., a man who has spent his life nurturing life in the soil, stood at the helm like a gardener of wisdom. With each word, he planted seeds of insight into the minds of everyone present. His dedication to horticulture is not just a profession; it’s a testament to how one individual can cultivate both nature and knowledge, nurturing growth wherever he treads. He reminded us that "vermicomposting is not merely about waste management but is, in fact, nature’s alchemy—transforming discarded remnants into rich, life-giving soil." Through his words, we began to see the beauty in decay—the realization that even what we discard has value, that every leaf and leftover has the potential to nurture new life.

Attendees were encouraged not just to view the process, we were involved and encouraged to participate in the actual vermicomposting. It reminds us that change often starts in the most unlikely places and that life finds a way, even in discarded scraps. By the end, we left not only with knowledge of vermicomposting but with a newfound respect for the earth itself—knowing that with every pile of compost, we’re quietly reshaping our future from the ground up!
