Sports Webinar

Sports as a Way of Life

We kicked off the new academic year with a webinar ‘Sports as a Way of Life’ hosted by the SJBHS department of Physical Education. Playing sports teaches us life lessons like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, accountability and regular exercise helps the brain grow.
To help shed more light on this, the webinar had several eminent speakers to help us understand the importance of physical and mental fitness and how we can achieve them both, especially during these testing times.
The august panel began the discussion with Indian Sporting Icon and an International Tennis Phenomenon, Olympic Winner, and holder of India’s greatest honours – the Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan Leander Paes holding first stage to share his life experiences. He spoke about the values of SJBHS imbued in his father were key in the formative experiences of his life through which he learned the value of integrity, the lessons to not cut corners and take shortcuts and accept both victories and failure in his stride.
Mr Sahen Gupta, Sport & Performance psychologist who works with athletes, specialising in resilience, neuro-cognitive training, high-performance mindset, mental fitness, athlete development and injury rehabilitation, then gave an inspiring speech on the importance of physical and mental fitness and ways to develop it using the ACE model. The first day concluded by a motivational talk regarding the long term development of an athlete, given by Dr Vece Paes, Old Boy, Olympic medallist and formed Indian Hockey champion.
The second day of the webinar continued to celebrate the spirit of sport in the school that produced several Olympians, international and national sporting stars and cricketing legends. The keynote address of the day was given by Mr Arun Lal, renowned Indian cricketer and commentator on the importance of resilience and motivation in sports and life that his own life experiences have taught him. Dr Ashok Ahuja, General Surgeon and specialist in Sports Medicine then shared his expertise over training, post sports fatigue recovery and nutrition. Dr Vece Paes rounded up the second day’s discussion with the role of meticulous and persistent training, environment and long term nurturing of a champion’s talent to reach his/her true potential. The forum was then opened up for a Q&A with the panellists, thus ending a two-day webinar on a high note!
